Chapter 3

=Ethan=

Alexia sits up as we drive into her street. She hands us some of her bags. “These are for you, just to get you started. There are also some magazines in there to give you ideas on the baby room.”

I see Max’s eyes go wide. “But...”

“No-one told me I wasn’t allowed to buy things for you guys. Just as long as people didn’t figure it out.” She leans over and gives us awkward hugs. “I’m just so happy for you guys. You will have the best baby ever.” She smiles and then kisses me on the cheek, but doesn’t move away before whispering, “make sure you buy some new jeans, they will be a lot more flattering than these will be soon.”

The car stops and she gets out, still dragging way too many bags with her. How she does it, I don’t know. There always seems to be more things that she buys, and somehow she never runs out of ways to carry it all by herself.

As the door closes I shake my head and Max looks at me. “What was that about?”

“Same thing the doc said, I need new jeans.” I grin but then my mouth goes dry as I catch the look Max is giving me. “What?”

He licks his lips. “You were just so amazing today.” He drags me in his lap and then pulls me close. “You took everything so well. I love you.”

I swallow hard. I know I said it this morning, on impulse. I don’t know if I can do it again. It’s not easy to say the words, even though I can feel the emotion so strongly. “Me... Me too.”

Max laughs, the rumbling sound vibrating in his chest. “Well, I would hope you would love you too.”

I flush. “No you. I love you too.” The words come out of my mouth and I hide my face against his chest.

Max holds me even tighter and I can feel his excitement about my statement become obvious in other places too. “I’m so happy to hear you say those words.” His whisper is hoarse.

“I can feel that.” I quickly close my mouth, Max is having a bad influence on me. I used to never talk like this before. He makes me say weird and naughty things.

“I’m glad.” He kisses the top of my head. “It’s all yours. I’m all yours.”

We sit in silence until the car drives into the garage under our house. The press have all gone away. We’re not interesting enough to keep reporting on when we’re only playing house and doing grown-up boring stuff. If only they knew...

We both grab a couple of bags from the car and take them into the house, we immediately go into Max’s bedroom and put the bags onto the bed. Both of us too curious to see what Alexia got us.

The first bag we open is pink, like the first store we went to. In it is a cute hat with little mittens and tiny socks, all in white with tiny green stripes.
